Did you hear the news?
Microsoft was ready to pull the plug on Windows 10 support this October 2025, pushing over 400 million pcs to upgrade to Windows 11 whether they wanted to or not.
But then something happened.
Something big.
The European Economic Area (EEA) told Microsoft to hold their horses.
And now, if you live in one of 30 European countries, you’ve got a free extra year of Windows 10 updates — until October 2026.
Wait… why the U-turn?
Here’s the backstory: Microsoft quietly offered users a so-called “FREE extension” to keep Windows 10 alive. But there was a catch.
To get it, you had to, either:
- Sync your PC settings with Microsoft’s cloud (OneDrive) via Windows Backup, or
- Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points (about $30 worth).
That’s not free. That’s daylight robbery
And regulators didn’t like that.
𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 (𝗗𝗠𝗔).
It’s designed to stop Big Tech from bullying the small guy into their services.
Forcing millions of Windows 10 users to adopt OneDrive just to stay secure?
That looked like a textbook violation.
So regulators pushed back — hard.
And Microsoft backed down.
The result: a win for Windows 10 users in Europe
Ff you live in the EEA — which includes all EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway — you’ll keep getting Windows 10 security updates until October 2026, no strings attached.
Here’s the full list of countries covered:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.
- The rest of the world: Windows 10 support ends 14 October 2025
- EEA countries: You’re safe until October 2026
It’s proof that sometimes regulators can (and do) keep big tech in check.
So if you’re in Europe, you’ve just been handed an extra year of breathing space before making the jump to Windows 11.
If you’re outside the EEA?
Better start planning that upgrade.
